Crain’s: Some hospitals feel impact of federal drug-discount cutbacks

“Three dozen hospitals in Michigan are adjusting to a new federal rule that slashed Medicare reimbursement rates on certain drugs from 6 percent above the sales price from pharmaceutical companies to 22.5 percent under the sales price, a move that is estimated to save drug companies $1.6 billion annually.

It will also hit some safety-net hospitals hard. Some 37 Michigan hospitals will lose a total of $73 million in revenue, according to the Michigan Health and Hospital Association. Those hospitals in Detroit include Henry Ford Hospital and Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Hospital, MHA said.”
